Make your text
easy to read
Complex texts are often not read. Only 15% of Danes have reading skills good enough to easily read, understand and evaluate complex texts.
This is shown by a study from VIVE (in Danish).
That is important to bear this in mind when communicating.
Brains are lazy
As an expert, consultant or researcher, you probably work with academic nuances. But your recipients – such as decision-makers, partners or citizens – need something that is easy to understand.
Because our brains are programmed to be "lazy". We instinctively prefer what is easy and clear. Linguistically and visually.
In cognitive psychology, this is called "processing fluency." The easier your message is for the brain to process:
-
the more we trust the sender.
-
the better we remember the point.
-
the greater the chance that your knowledge will be used in practice.
Your reader will find it easier to read the text on the right, which applies writing principles from cognitive linguistics:
Before (technicalnlanguage)
"Chronic psychosocial stress exposure was associated with elevated inflammatory biomarkers and increased risk of cardiovascular events."
Before (technical language)
"Aerobic exercise three times a week over twelve weeks improved cognitive functions and increased hippocampal volume in older adults with mild cognitive impairment."
After (plain language)
"Prolonged stress increases inflammation in the body and the risk of heart attack."
After (plain language)
"Exercise three times a week for 12 weeks strengthened memory in older people. At the same time, the brain's memory center grew."
Unfortunately, many important professional messages are lost because the language is too difficult for the brain to process. That’s where I come in.
